I have the honour to transmit for

Your Lordship's favourable consideration the enclosed copy

of a letter from the Superintendent of Victoria Gaol,

dated the 4th. instant, on the subject of the salary of

Mr. R. H. A. Craig, Assistant Superintendent of Victoria

Gaol.

the Assistant Superintendent in his salary is that, whereas

the pay of the post $2,400 rising to $3,000 is at 3 shill-

-ings to the dollar (the rate at which all dollar salaries

are paid) equivalent to £360 rising to £450, under the

Sterling Salary Scheme the pay of an Assistant Superintend-

-ant of Police is increased to £420 rising to £540. The

responsibility of the Assistant Superintendent of Victoria

Gaol is really greater than that of an Assistant
